PETREHN, JOHN - KODACHROME BALLOON

John Petrehn - Leawood KS - Racer XJohn Petrehn - Kodachrome Balloon Johnny Petrehn is from Leawood, Kansas. He started hot-air ballooning in the early 70's has been a licensed balloon pilot since 1987 and has over 2600 hours as pilot-in-command of a balloon. He works in real estate.

The name of his balloon this year is "Kodachrome". Previously he flew "Racer X" and he has competed in EVERY Field of Flight Balloon Competition in Battle Creek since 1991. His brother, Paul Petrehn, will be flying this year as well.

Johnny won 1st place in 2014 and placed #8 in 2013 & #1 in the 2012 hot-air balloon competitions.

Steve Mitchell - Streetsboro OH - Scrumtrulescent BalloonSteve Mitchell - ScrumtrulescentSteve Mitchell is from Streetsboro, Ohio. Steve grew up in Battle Creek and was a 2003 graduate of Lakeview High School and 2008 graduate of Michigan State University. His parents, Jeff and Mary Mitchell, live just 1/2 mile south of the W.K. Kellogg Airport. While in high school he volunteered to crew for out of town pilots with his brother and loved it so much, they decided to get a family balloon called "Summer Glow", which has been involved in previous Field of Flight events. Steve will be flying his Scrumtrulescent balloon in this year's competition. 

Steve has been a licensed balloon pilot since 2008 and has over 170 hours as pilot-in-command of a balloon. He is an accomplished competitor having won a number of various ballooning events. He also claimed Rookie of the Year honors at the 2014 US National Hot-Air Balloon Championship finishing 19th overall.  

Steve placed #14 in the 2014 Field of Flight Hot-Air Balloon Competition and this is his 4th year participating in the event.

Jeff Pestun Hot Air Balloon Jeff Pestun Jeff Pestun is from Holland, Michigan and is a native of Battle Creek area watching hot-air balloons and then crewing his first balloon when he was only 8 years old. He has been a licensed hot-air balloon pilot since 1999 with over 400 hours as pilot-in-command of a balloon. He presently works in  for Hope College. Jeff is married to his wife Robyn and has two children, Andrew (12) and Allison (10). The name of his balloon is "Special Purpose" which is a reference to the movie "The Jerk". This will be his 14th year participating in the Field of Flight Balloon Competition. Jeff is a fan of Trace Christenson and admirer of Amy Coan and Erica Hahn (the famous balloonists not the TV character that may or may not be based on her).

Jeff placed #4 in 2011, #11 in 2013 & 2012 and #9 in 2011 in the hot-air balloon competitions.

Stephen Peck Hot Air Balloon Stephen Peck Stephen Peck is from Battle Creek, Michigan. He has been a licensed hot-air balloon pilot since 1991 and has over 400 hours as pilot-in-command of a balloon. He is a retired counselor with the Red Cross and Binder Park Zoo. His wife's name is Sandy.

This will be his 21st year participating in the event. His balloon was named "Gypsy Wind" because Stephen likes the song Gypsy Wind! When he was first learning, Tom Roush required him to land the balloon at a nearby nudist colony...a day he will never forget.

Richard Parr - Racing Venture BalloonRichard Parr - Racing Venture BalloonRichard Parr will be flying Racing Venture in his 3rd Field of Flight Hot-Air Balloon Competition this year in Battle Creek. Richard started flying in 1959 and took up ballooning after retirement and has been a licensed hot-air balloon pilot since 2007 and has logged over 405 pilot-in-command hours. He went to Purdue University Engineering School followed by 5 years as a Navigator in the USAF. He was a manager for Cargill Inc. for 35 years and lived in 4 countries and many locations. Presently Richard lives in Pittsboro, North Carolina on a private air strip with his wife Lindy.

NELSON, MIKE - MIDNIGHT RACER/WWMT BALLOON

Mike NelsonMike Nelson - Midnight Racer (WWMT Banner)Mike "Fire Marshall Mike" Nelson is from Fortville, Indiana. He grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico near another large hot-air ballooning event. He has been a licensed balloon pilot since 2005 and has over 651 hours as pilot-in-command of a balloon. He is a Heavy Equipment Diesel Mechanic.

His balloon naming was a family effort. They all wrote possible balloon names on the refrigerator and eventually picked "Midnight Racer". In the 2015 event, he'll fly Midnight Racer with the Channel 3 WWMT TV banner. He also owns and flies another balloon called Tickled Pink.

This will be his 10th year participating in the event. He is married to his awesome wife Keely and has four children; Brittany, Olivia, Lita and Mikey. His website, Ballooning 4 Education, was created to promote the science of ballooning and flying in general to get the younger generation involved in flying.

Michael Moore - Shananigans BalloonMichael Moore - Shananigans BalloonMichael "Mike" Moore is from Augusta, Michigan. He got into ballooning by crewing for Dale Wilson, Lori, his wife, actually is the one that named my balloon, Shenanigans. After buying my balloon in 2002, she asked if I had a name for it yet and I replied, "I was going to treat it like a new puppy. After you have it for a while, a name usually just comes to you." She said, "Good idea cause Lord knows the SHENANIGANS you're gonna pull...!" And the rest is history.

The Battle Creek event is, of course, my favorite event being the first I ever attended, so I look forward to participating every year, especially now that I'm retired. Join the Hot Air Balloon Floaters Association group on Facebook.

Rick Kerber in the Michigan Cat BalloonRick Kerber, Wayland, MI - Michigan CAT BalloonRick Kerber is from Wayland, Michigan. Rick came from a family of balloonists. He started flying hot-air balloons when he was 16. He has been a licensed balloon pilot since 2002 with over 510 hours as pilot in command of a balloon. Rick has been a rental manager at Michigan CAT for 31 years. He is married to his wife Cris and has two daughters, Jennie & Megan.

Rick flies the Michigan CAT/The Cat Rental Store Balloon. This will be his 9th year participating in the event. Rick's family will be his crew. Rick placed #15 in the 2012 Field of Flight hot-air balloon competition. Welcome back Rick!

Tyler JaquesTyler Jaques - Battle Creek, MI - Post Racer BalloonTyler Jaques is from Battle Creek, Michigan. He has been a licensed balloon pilot since 2007 and has over 230 hours being pilot-in-command. This will be Tyler's 8th year competing in the event but he has crewed at the event since he was a child. He became interested in hot-air ballooning because his father, Dave Jaques, is also a pilot of the Post Sugar Bear balloon. It truly is great for him to be participating. Tyler's balloon is the "Post - Cutting Edge" Balloon. He previously flew the red and white Post 2 balloon. His crew is made up of Post Balloon Club members as well as local volunteers.

Tyler is presently a manager at Meijer and owns his own hot-air balloon ride company called BC Balloon Rides where he pilots his balloon called Sapphire. He has a daughter named Brittney and his girlfriend's name is Erica Brandt.

Dave JaquesDave Jacques Sugar Bear Hot Air Balloon

Dave Jaques is a commercial pilot who originates from Battle Creek, Michigan and now lives in Venice, Florida. He started flying hot air balloons in 1985. He worked 36 years for Post Cereal company as an electrician where he was instrumental in forming the Post Hot Air Balloon Program. Though the corporation owns a total of six balloons, including a Maxwell House coffee balloon, and a cereal bowl, the "Sugar Bear" special shape balloon from the Golden Crisp cereal and Saturday morning cartoons is Dave's biggest passion. Undoubtedly, the bear is one of the most popular balloons among the Field of Flight spectators young and old. 

Some of Dave's accomplishments include flying in England, Canada and the U.S.A. Dave recently flew at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway 100 year centennial balloon race and won first place. He has placed well in many other events also and was honored to fly in the World Hot Air Balloon Championships in Battle Creek, where pilots from 33 counties competed for the title of world champion.

Dave "Capt. Flaque" Jaques' (pronounced flake) balloon is the highly recognized "Post Sugar Bear" balloon. Back in 1984, two of his friends bought a balloon. He crewed for them and eventually formed the Post Balloon Club. His crew is made up of Post Balloon Club members as well as local volunteers.

Gary Heavin - Almost Heaven BalloonGary Heavin - Almost Heaven BalloonGary Heavin has been flying hot-air balloons for over 30 years with over 1000 flight hours. He is the founder of Curves International, the world's largest fitness franchise and is currently the Chair of the Board for Curves and Jenny Craig. He resides on his ranch in central Texas with his wife and crew chief Diane. They have four children and four grandchildren. Gary has a passion for flying which includes helicopters and jet aircraft. His balloon name, Almost Heaven, is a play on his last name.

Gary placed #4 in 2013 & #10 in 2012 hot-air balloon competitions.

Brandon Heavin, Curves Unity BalloonBrandon Heavin - Ms B Heavin BalloonBrandon Heavin is from Moody, Texas. Brandon's father, Gary taught him how to fly. He has been a licensed balloon pilot since 2002 and has over 225 hours as pilot-in-command of a balloon. Brandon is currently raising beef cattle and farming - "Someone has to feed the people!"

The name of his balloon is "Ms B Heavin" which is a play on the 'infamous' Heavin name and for his wife, Amy.

This will be his 7th year participating in the event. His father, Gary Heavin, also pilots the "Almost Heavin" balloon. Brandon and his wife Amy crew for his balloon.

Brandon placed #12 in 2014 and #15 in the 2013 Hot-Air Balloon Competitions.

Rhett Heartsill Hot Air BalloonRhett Heartsill Rhett Heartsill's father is Joe Heartsill (Texas Racer). Due to this, Rhett was born into the hot-air ballooning world. Rhett and his wife Jobi are both from San Angelo, Texas. He has been a licensed balloon pilot for over 9 years and has over 274 hours as pilot-in-command of a balloon. He works as a geologist.

The name of his balloon is "Texas Star", which looks very similar to his dad's balloon. This will be is 8th year participating in the event.

Rhett placed #14 in 2013, #3 in 2012 and #12 in 2011 in the hot-air balloon competitions.

 Joe HeartsillJoe Heartsill Hot Air Balloon Joe Heartsill is from San Angelo, Texas. Joe attended the Albuquerque, New Mexico balloon festival in 1978 and knew he had to get one for himself. He purchased his balloon and didn't even know how to fly it! He has been a licensed balloon pilot for over 34 years and has over 2000 hours as pilot-in-command of a balloon. Joe works in Investments. He is married to his wife Nancy and has a daughter named Kate as well as his two sons, Rhett & Lucas.

The name of his balloon is "Texas Racer" simply because he loves to race and is from Texas. This will be his 26nd year participating in the event.

Joe placed #3 in 2013, #5 in 2012 & #6 in 2011 Hot-Air Balloon Competitions.

Larry Coan Hot Air BalloonLarry Coan Larry Coan is from Livonia, Michigan. He is an engineer for the Ford Motor Company. He is married to his wife Amy and together they have two children, Teri and Robin.

Larry received a hot-air balloon ride for his 27th birthday and was hooked. The rest is history. He has been a balloon pilot since 2005 with over 250 hours as pilot-in-command of a balloon.

The name of his balloon is "Superfluous", pronounced su·PER-flu·ous, which means being more than is sufficient or required; excessive. This will be his 8th year participating in the event. Larry's crew chief is Jonny Hodge, who grew up in the sport because his dad was a pilot since he was a baby.

Larry placed #4 in the 2011 hot-air balloon competition.
